pROCESS OF GETTING A SERVICE DOG

Working with a service dog is a life-changing step. At Roy Canine, our compassionate, structured training helps you and your dog build the skills and confidence needed for certification and lifelong success together.

PROCESS:

1 - Doctor's Letter

Before beginning your journey with Roy Canine, you must provide a letter from your doctor or healthcare professional recommending a service dog for medical reasons. This ensures that your service dog journey is medically supported and appropriate for your needs.

2 - Initial Consultation

We will meet to discuss your needs, goals, and expectations for the service dog training process. This is a chance for us to get to know each other and outline the first steps toward training.

3 - Assessment

Roy Canine will carefully assess your dog to determine if it has the temperament and potential to become a successful service dog. During this stage, I’ll guide you through the evaluation process and provide honest, supportive feedback, helping set you and your dog up for the best chance of success.

4 - Training Plan

I’ll design a personalized training roadmap tailored to your situation, focusing on obedience, service dog tasks, and handler coaching, essential components of the service dog training process.

5 - Training Sessions

You and your dog will participate in private and/or group sessions, depending on what works best for your progress. Training will build trust, focus, and the specific skills needed for your service dog to support you in daily life.

6 - Certification

Once your training plan is successfully completed, your dog will be evaluated and certified as a Service Dog. This service dog certification is valid for three years. To maintain high standards, recertification is required to ensure your service dog continues to demonstrate appropriate behavior and consistently fulfills expectations in public settings. You and your dog will graduate as a confident, capable team — prepared to face the world together.
